Just when my old Slazenger V1200 thought there was no chance of being brought out of retirement, I was asked to join a game against a team of Afghani refugee school kids. Soft ball, hence no pads, which was probably just as well. Suffice to say they were a lot better than us, but I did manage to pull off an outrageous Jonny Bairstow-style ramp shot for four runs, which was captured for posterity by the photographer.
There's no point writing a post about the power of sport to bring people together and improve lives (though true), as far more eloquent people than me have that subject well covered. But it was a really fun day, and the Afghani school kids were great lads.
